Marc Ray
CGTF Level IV Master Teaching Professional Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada

As a 14-year-old boy, I started my career path working in the golf industry. I worked for six seasons on a maintenance crew at a 36-hole facility just north of Belleville, Ontario. During my college years, I was moved into the pro shop, where I learned another facet of the business. At that point, it was clear that I enjoyed the people and wished to pursue a career in golf.

After graduating from college with a degree in Business Administration, I went to work for my family business doing accounting and income taxes, primarily in the winter. This allowed me to continue working the summers in the golf industry. At age 25, I was offered a teaching position at a new 9-hole facility. At that point, I had made the decision to join the Canadian Golf Teachers Federation and pursue my dream of becoming a golf pro. I loved teaching and building my skills sets. In five years, I really learned how to communicate with people and help them to relax in order to learn.

In the fall of 2005, I was lucky enough to earn my Master Golf Teaching Professional® certification. That winter, I decided I was ready for more and landed a job as general manager of golf operations in Timmins, Ontario, at a 27-hole golf club. Now, at 33 years of age, I manage two golf courses in Wasaga Beach, Ontario. My current employment is great, and I enjoy the corporate environment and really like this new opportunity.

My advice for anyone starting their journey in this industry for any position would be simple: try to learn something from each customer or situation you meet. Second, professionalism is not as common as thought. All people (staff, customers, owners and peers) wish to be treated with respect and honesty.

I would love to thank the Canadian Golf Teachers Federation for helping me to attain my aspirations. I know now that my certifications have proved invaluable along the way.
