GEORGE CLAFFEY
USGTF Level III Member, Berlin, CT

During the week of February 16-21, 2008, at the certification course in Kissimmee, Florida, I had the pleasure of working with a group of highly motivated and skilled individuals. One such person was George E. Claffey III. Holding a Masters in Arts and Education, George has been a school administrator his entire career. He has already been the principal at three different schools – two high schools and one grammar school. While in charge of these various institutions, George ran a very successful golf training program.

In college, George was the placekicker for West Virginia Wesleyan College. While there, he set a record for the longest field goal in West Virginia Wesleyan history. He booted a 54-yarder, and the record still stands to this day.

“I played on a semi-professional level for many years, using the same concepts I applied in kicking (backswing, head down, and follow through) to make the transition to golf,” stated George. “I thank my mother and father for giving me the opportunity to learn the basics of golf at the Trenton Country Club in New Jersey. It was great being introduced to the game at such an early age, and I now give that gift to others through my camps, clinics, and schools.”

Today, George is the principal at the St. Stanislaus School in Meriden, Connecticut. He is also the course
advisor at the TPC River Highlands golf course, home of the Travelers Championship. To top all this off, George is a certified coach with the First Tee program, and is the teaching pro at Miner Hills Golf Course in Middleton, Connecticut.

George concluded by saying, “The USGTF has enabled me to retain my professional status while making a positive difference in young people’s lives in the worlds of education and golf, a great combination.”
